Associate Director of Facilities - Student & Campus Life
Student and Campus Life (SCL) inspires transformation in all Cornell students on their journey of individual, academic and personal evolution. Our division is comprised of leading student affairs experts who support our campus on pressing student life matters including public service, health, wellness, social justice, residential living, food services, sports, recreation, career services, and student activities and organizations including sorority and fraternity life. We provide support and services to roughly 25,000 undergraduate, graduate, and professional students on multiple campuses in the U.S. and abroad.
As a part of the SCL Office of the Vice President's unit, the SCL Facilities team supports the student campus experience, by ensuring safe, clean, and operational spaces for students to live, eat, recreate, connect, and engage with each other. With this mission in mind, the team is focused on helping our customers and end-users navigate critical decisions regarding the use and maintenance of their space. They do this through analyzing risks and associated costs, exploring additional services that add value, considering safety and security factors, and ensuring business continuity. Members of this group are passionate about helping customers, think critically about how small decisions can have large impacts, and have a knack for integrating people and physical places. This team is literally the "foundation" upon which the student experience here at Cornell is built.
The Associate Director of Facilities is a critical strategic partner to the SCL Facilities Director in regards to long range planning and prioritization while simultaneously serving as key point of contact for an assigned client group within the Student and Campus Life (SCL) portfolio tying together ongoing building maintenance, planned facility improvements and long-term project development to ensure safe, reliable, engaging and functional spaces. In addition, this role will also help to serve as liaison to central facilities zone structure, while promoting partnership with zone service providers to ensure work is completed in accordance with Cornell processes and will partner on strategic planning and execution of building condition assessments while advocating and prioritizing needs of the approx. 3.5 million sq ft of SCL residence hall and housing portfolio. This position will manage, prioritize and direct the maintenance priorities of more than 50 facilities while cultivating strong partnerships with key unit stakeholders through the development and delivery of appropriate communication and guidance to ensure safe and consistent practices related to operational procedures and policies. Additionally, this role will participate in the prioritization, development and planning of construction and renovation projects, including short-term and long-term planning, determining needs and providing guidance related to contractor selection and project expectations. The Associate Director, will collaborate with stakeholders on budget development while monitoring expenses against budget and recommending strategies for cost efficiencies including recommending purchasing strategies and delivery approaches.
A successful Associate Director of Facilities will possess full spectrum of facilities management knowledge and leverage that knowledge to find creative solutions that enable business continuity, avoid impact on operations and expedite the needs of the Division. The Associate Director must demonstrate stellar customer service management to make complex facilities issues understandable for clients and help foster strong partnerships with key stakeholders. This role will also need to demonstrate solid decision making, critical thinking skills, and have the ability to maintain effective communication and appropriate prioritization while managing multiple priorities. The successful candidate must posses a thorough understanding of budgets and facilities finances, as it is responsible for millions in Capital investment annually.
Required Qualifications:
- Bachelor's degree or other formal training program with 5-7 years of experience in facilities management, maintenance, or construction; or equivalent combination of education and relevant experience
- General knowledge of a variety of building systems, such as electrical, HVAC, ATC controls, piping, fire protection, roofing, fenestrations, etc.
- Ability to lift 20 lbs. independently (and occasionally more with assistance) and ability to walk facilities on routine basis in support of inspection process and follow up to maintenance needs. Must be able to negotiate stairs, ladders and a variety of mechanical spaces with or without assistance.
Preferred Qualifications:
- Advanced degree or additional professional experience beyond 5 to 7 years in a related field
- Prior experience performing facilities related work in a large-scale or highly complex environment
- Previous experience working in an academic or campus setting
- Project management or project lead experience
- Experience with CAD and ability to understand construction documents.
Visa sponsorship is not available for this position. This position is located in Ithaca, New York. The successful applicant could work a hybrid schedule but would be expected to work on campus as business needs require. The New York Convenience of employer guidelines require New York State individual tax reporting and withholdings for this position. Additional individual state income tax filings may also be required if working temporarily outside New York State.
