Organizational Unit Overview
The Division of Student Affairs actively supports the University’s missions of education, research, and service by providing comprehensive programs and services to assist each student in developing intellectually, socially, morally, and culturally. The Division anticipates students’ developmental needs throughout their collegiate experiences and promotes students’ development by fostering a community of learning, which encourages individual student involvement and participation. Through collaboration, the division provides programs and services that are grounded in theory, assessment, and sound practice.
The Department of Student Involvement and Leadership is a major component of East Carolina University’s Division of Student Affairs, which serves the university community as a whole through its’ programs and services. Student Involvement and Leadership is committed to enhance the educational experience for all students and to help build a sense of campus community through a wide variety of programs and services for individuals and for student groups. Through a broad range of co-curricular, cultural, educational, recreational, and social programs, Student Involvement and Leadership supports the university in achieving its mission of being the cultural center for the region. This department is committed to complementing the academic programs which enhance the educational experiences of student; facilities, which serve as laboratories where theoretical and experiential experiences are integrated, and the guidance of a professional staff member to aid students in further developing their intellectual capabilities, creative potential, and citizenship skills. Student Involvement and Leadership seeks to serve all segments of the university as a unifier in the life of East Carolina University, cultivating enduring regard for and loyalty to the University.
The Department of Student Involvement and Leadership is the primary contact point for students through the Center for Student Leadership, the Office of Student Involvement & Activities, the Student Organization Center, the Student Government Association, the Volunteer and Service-Learning Center, the Ledonia Wright Cultural Center and the Office of Greek Life. Additionally, the department provides services for the ECU community through the Central Ticket Office, the Office of Event Planning and Conference Services, Office of Finance & Administration, Mendenhall Student Center Operations, and Production Services.
SGA exists to serve and advocate for the students of East Carolina University. They also provide over $225,000 annually to fund travel, events, and supply requests for student organizations at ECU.
Job Duties
Primary Purpose of the Position
The primary purpose of this position is to advise the Student Government Association. The East Carolina University Student Government Association serves as the foremost advocate for the ECU student body and offers the premier opportunities for university engagement through:
Acknowledging and fostering the opportunity for students to participate in addressing student and institutional concerns;
Sponsoring beneficial student activities and organizations;
Stimulating communication and cooperation among students, faculty, and administration;
Encouraging accountability to the policies and values fundamental to the university
The secondary purpose of the position is to oversee funding of student organization activities through SGA Appropriations, and clear communication of campus policies.
This position reports directly to the Senior Director of Student Centers and supervises one full-time employee, the SGA Financial Advisor/Specialist
PRIMARY RESPONSIBILITIES
Work collaboratively to set strategic goals to promote the advancement of the SGA in all areas of campus including visibility, advocacy, and image (15%)
Advise and hold SGA accountable with specific regard to their governing documents, policies, procedures, and academic and conduct standards (15%)
Provide oversight of the SGA budget and supervise Student Government Financial Advisor (15%)
Attend all official meetings of the SGA, including branch meetings, conferences, retreats, etc. as appropriate. Assist SGA students in participating in SGA-related activities and travel. (15%)
Serves as the university liaison with UNC General Administration and Robert Wright Alumni Society (5%)
Provide weekly SGA updates to the Director and Associate Vice Chancellor for SIL. (5%)
Serve as a mentor to SGA leaders, developing their leadership competencies and leading training initiatives(15%)
Ensure proper marketing of our programs, initiatives, and services are marketed well on social media, through our student organization management platform, and in campus emails as appropriate. (5%)
Coordinate assessment activities for SGA and serve as the liaison between the office and Student Affairs Assessment, Research, and Retention. (5%)
OTHER DUTIES (5%)
Serve as a resource and advise students with regard to university and state policies and procedures.
Engage in individual and group advising to help students achieve more effective social, personal, professional, and educational development
Serve on various Student Affairs and university-wide committees
Serve in a leadership role on major event committees
Provide on-site coordination and supervision during programs/events
Develop evaluation instruments and prepare summative reports for each program
Recruit faculty and staff from across campus to assist in program development and facilitation
Encourage collaboration across the campus and within the division
Minimum Education/Experience
Master’s Degree in a relevant discipline, plus two (2) years of related experience; or a Bachelor’s degree in a relevant discipline, plus five (5) years of related experience working with students;
Demonstrated knowledge and experience in a theoretical foundation in the principles and practices of leadership development and student organization advisement
Preferred Experience, Skills, Training/Education
Strong interpersonal, communication, and organizational skills;
Ability to manage multiple priorities;
Experience communicating and working effectively with diverse populations;
Technical background in social media
