The Center for Campus Involvement (CCI) in University Unions within Student Life at the University of Michigan is a dynamic, student-focused department that serves all undergraduate and graduate students through student programs, student services, and student development. Through meaningful involvement, CCI creates transformative experiences, a vibrant community, and lifelong memories for University of Michigan students. CCI recognizes and supports over 1,500 student organizations through education, advising, advocacy and services. CCI also implements hundreds of social, educational, cultural, and recreational programs each year, focused on building community within and beyond University Unions’ facilities. CCI directly employs 14 regular staff and 80 student staff.
University Unions is a self-funded auxiliary enterprise which serves the campus through its three historic unions (Michigan Union, Michigan League, Pierpont Commons), academic meeting and dining facility (Palmer Commons), Center for Campus Involvement (over 1,500 student organizations and hundreds of programs), and works in close partnership with Conferences & Event Services and Michigan Dining to provide student-focused and customer-oriented service to the campus community. Total budget volume for University Unions approximates $20 million. University Unions directly employs over 50 regular staff and 250 student staff.
Job Summary
The Manager of the Student Organization Resource Center (SORC) provides essential leadership of a small business operation to provide low-cost resources and advertising services to student organizations and University of Michigan departments. You will ensure available resources meet the needs of current students. You will be an active Center for Campus Involvement (CCI) team member in University Unions, providing student advising and program development where needed. You will oversee 10-15 undergraduate student employees. You will report to the CCI Assistant Director for Campus Resources and Major Events.
Responsibilities*
Operational Management (30%)
Identify, develop and produce resources for student organizations and campus departments to rent and purchase.
Initiate and coordinate the scheduling process to manage the distribution of campus advertising resources, such as outdoor banner spaces, Diag boards, table tents, and digital advertisements in University Unions’ and other facilities, and signage in University buses.
Order and maintain inventories of materials used in-house and for resale.
Assess current services from user and non-user groups and identify areas for improvement, specifically student organization resources that SORC should address.
Responsible for all safety procedures associated with managing the SORC, such as cash handling and campus deliveries.
Provide internal and external direct communications with customers and campus partners.
Uphold and educate student organizations and departments about University Brand Standards, working with campus partners.
Monitor outdoor and indoor SORC equipment maintenance needs, such as banner poles, Diag boards, and table tents.
Advertise the SORC through department websites, social media, campus presentations, and other promotional methods.
Student Advisement and Program Development (30%)
Provide education, training, and support to student organization leaders through their co-curricular involvement while maintaining a patient and accepting attitude when working with students and staff.
Be a resource to students in all aspects of event development.
Coordinate with campus partners on behalf of students regarding campus event policies.
Reach out and maintain relationships with other University and Division of Student Life departments.
Communicate and interpret Center for Campus Involvement, University Unions, Division of Student Life and University policies and procedures.
Recognize the needs/issues of specific University student populations and academic colleges and establish plans for meeting those needs, including outreach to those communities.
Take measures to ensure the safety and security of students, staff and facilities.
Student Employee Supervision (25%)
Recruit, manage, and train 10-15 student temporary employees.
Foster a positive, collaborative work environment and make ethical decisions that promote student, organizational, and institutional success.
Staff SORC with student temporary employee assistance during the weekdays, evenings, and weekends.
Resolve problems by comparing and evaluating multiple courses of action and understanding policies and laws.
Write, administer, and interpret department policies to meet the needs of students and other customers.
Collaborate with University Unions facility staff, Student Life, and other University colleagues (i.e., Facilities & Operations, Public Safety) to coordinate logistics for services.
Financial Management (15%)
Develop and oversee budgets, balancing revenue and expenditures, with a total budget volume of $150,000.
Manage and approve student temporary employee payroll.
Collaborate with Student Life Budget and Finance.
Responsible for equipment and supply purchasing, following University Procurement policies.
Maintain accurate records and prepare reports.
Required Qualifications*
Bachelor’s Degree or equivalent combination of education and experience
Minimum two years of experience in student activities or retail operations as a student/temporary employee or professional
At least two years of student employee or professional staff supervision experience
Desired Qualifications*
Master’s degree in Student Affairs/College Personnel, Marketing, Business or similar field
5 years or more of professional experiences (including graduate program work experience)
Experience with college student activities
Experience with marketing, design, or communications

Financial/Budgetary Responsibility
Responsible for developing and managing an annual budget that generates sufficient revenue to cover expenses with a total budget volume of $150,000.
