The University of MInnesota Morris Office of Student Activities, Conferences, and Events coordinates facilities, programs and services that facilitate student co-curricular engagement and learning, gather the campus and friends for major events, foster a cohesive and supportive campus community, and connect the campus and area community through events, outreach and the shared use of campus facilities.
The Coordinator of Student Activities, Conferences and Events provides advising, events management and student development within a comprehensive student activities program designed to meet the educational, cultural, recreational, and social co-curricular needs of a diverse student body at a rural public liberal arts college. The position provides vision, oversight and support for student groups and organizations; advises and guides student leaders regarding aims, policies, plans and philosophies. The coordinator develops programs to create a diverse and inclusive University community and programs that offer opportunities for students to develop leadership experiences and skills.
This position is 100% time, 12 month, classification 8462ED, Student Services Professional 2 - Student Engagement and Development.
Job duties
Events programming and organization management support (65% of time)
Lead and/or assist in developing and producing of campus events, conferences, and programs
- Advise and support campus programmers assuring University events meet campus expectations of quality in appearance and experience.
- Foster, maintain, and model collaborative relationships with campus units to provide seamless experiences and services to achieve shared University outcomes.
- Work with event planners to ensure compliance with University Safety of Minors and other relevant policies.
Advise and oversee the Campus Activities Council (CAC).
- Advise the CAC chairs in all aspects of program planning and implementation, budget development, contract negotiations, marketing, and program evaluation.
- Oversee and manage all CAC budgets ($150,000 annually).
- Develop and manage UMN Morris’ signature professional performing arts and convocations (lecture) series designed to provide cultural and artistic development opportunities for Morris students, faculty, and staff and to further the University’s public land grant mission as a center of culture and education for West Central Minnesota.
- Provide appropriate challenge and support to help student chairs understand and meet the educational, cultural, social and recreational needs of the UMN Morris student body.
- Manage all aspects of event production for national and regional touring productions, visiting artists, lecturers, and film/media productions including contracting, budgeting, marketing and presentation.
- Facilitate student engagement and leadership and arts administration skill development.
- Foster campus and community partnerships to support artist and lecturer residencies, arts education, engagement with thought leaders, and audience development.
- Seek, secure, and assist in implementing grants to support major arts events. With Grants Development, assure compliance with agency and University policies and procedures.
Assist in the management of the Office of Student Activities, Conferences and Events. (20% of time)
- Serve as primary coordinator for use of the LaFave House, overseeing all aspects of operations.
- Assist in the coordination of major all campus events (e.g. Commencement, Welcome Week, Homecoming) as well as summer camps and conferences.
- Assist in other areas as needed.
Assist in coordinating student leader, organization, and engagement data collection and management. Implement assessment processes to document program impact and enrich student learning through high impact practices. (10% of time)
Serve as a member of the Student Life On-Call staff, responding to student life and facility related issues outside of regular hours for two to three weeks per semester. (5% of time)
Essential knowledge, skills and abilities
- Bachelor’s degree and two years relevant experience (or a combination of related education and work experience to equal six years).
- Demonstrated experience and success in planning, implementing, and evaluating events/programs.
- Experience coordinating and delivering successful programs or services that meet and exceed expectations.
- The ability to effectively work with and welcome people from diverse cultures and backgrounds.
- A demonstrated commitment to building a diverse, inclusive work environment.
- Ability to understand and interpret policies, rules, and regulations.
- Capacity to use technology effectively and creatively to accomplish responsibilities.

Preferred knowledge, skills and abilities
- Master’s degree preferred in student development, higher education or related field.
- Experience developing and implementing small to large scale events and programs.
- Experience leading collaborative teams, fiscal management, and program oversight.
- Knowledge of risk management, experiential learning, and assessment techniques.
