GENERAL STATEMENT
The Student Events & Programming Manager is responsible for the development and implementation of a comprehensive college union and campus-wide programming plan. Incumbent manages the formulation, coordination, and execution of all Associated Students, Incorporated (ASI) social, cultural, educational and entertainment programming and production. This position provides management oversight of the student programming board in all aspects of programming and executing major events.
Guided by ASI and USU missions and goals, develops and implements culturally conscious programming focusing in diversity, equity, and identity-based events in efforts to support students who are historically underrepresented in higher education and to create cross-cultural understanding and competence for CSULB students. The incumbent establishes and maintains effective working relationships with members of the university community and off-campus resources, and is responsible for coordination of collaborated programming efforts with the office of Student Life and Development, the Multicultural Affairs Office, Housing and Residential Life, Athletics, and other campus programming units.
This position is responsible for securing, maintaining and updating the Permanent Art Collection and the Art Gallery for the University Student Union (USU).
ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES include the following. Other duties may be assigned.
- Plans and executes a variety of major events such as concerts, shows, theatrical events, lectures, exhibits, festivals, and other programming activities working in conjunction with the Beach Pride Events Coordinator and the student programming board.
- Supervises and assists the Beach Pride Events Coordinator in the design and implementation of a wide range of co-curricular, culturally diverse events and activities to enhance the USU and Student Recreation and Wellness Center environment and foster student engagement with the CSULB campus.
- Collaborates with the Student Recreation & Wellness Center programming staff as needed in the design and implementation of co-curricular, culturally diverse events and activities to enhance the Student Recreation and Wellness Center (SRWC).
- Provides oversight and direction to the student programming board to ensure a comprehensive programming plan for ASI.
- Provides leadership, guidance, and advice to student programmers. Assists them in developing programming skills through the planning and coordination of events and activities.
- Develops and implements a strategic programming plan for equity, diversity, and an inclusive student experience that is mission-driven and aligned with the ASI and university’s overall strategic plan and goals. Guide the overall direction of diversity-oriented programs and initiatives.
- Works with the ASI Student Government on events and programs to support annual initiatives. Facilitates collaboration and programming support between ASI student government and student programming board in efforts to create new and innovative programming fulfilling academic year goals.
- Works closely with the university and the Office of Student Life and Development to ensure adherence to ASI and university regulations, policies and procedures. Provides student programming board with information and interpretation of ASI policies and procedures related to programming.
- Oversight of department marketing campaigns, ensuring all event marketing is professional, timely and effective. Manages department branding and promotional efforts to ensure positive visibility of Beach Pride Events department and ASI.
- Plans and negotiates performance contracts in association with the Assistant Director, Programs. Makes the necessary scheduling, equipment and logistical arrangements for the facility. Maintains contact with vendors.
- Evaluates risk management and safety protocols for all ASI events. Reviews and approves insurance certificates and safety mitigation plans in conjunction with Assistant Director, Programs. Serves as liaison with campus risk management and safety for Beach Pride Events programs.
- Conducts strategic planning for department and programming efforts based on analysis of assessments and programmatic review. Develops year-end reports and leads visioning efforts for ongoing department growth and development.
- Manages the operating budget for programming areas. Directs Beach Pride Events Coordinator and student programmers regarding budgetary limitations, cost projections, and revenue-generating ideas or methods. Assists with their development and writing of funding proposals. Authorizes expenditures, monitors budgets, and advises student programmers on their financial status.
- Secures cooperation for co-sponsored events in an effort to produce inclusive programs for the campus community. Serves as liaison between campus departments and programs for campus-wide events. Develops and maintains relationships with faculty and staff to exchange and update information and to enlist support for programs through faculty advisement, group membership, guest speaking engagements, etc. Serves on various university committees as requested.
- Manages the Beach Pride Center office. Maintains a high level of customer service and provides a professional work environment for employees, volunteers and community guests.
- Coordinates the selection of the USU Permanent Art Program and USU Art Gallery. Coordinates the selection of location and installation of each piece of artwork in conjunction with the USU Board of Trustees.
SUPERVISORY RESPONSIBILITIES
Supervises one (1) full-time Beach Pride Events Coordinator, up to eight (8) part-time employees, and 10-20 volunteers in the ASI programming area. Carries out supervisory responsibilities in accordance with the organization’s policies and applicable laws. Responsibilities include assisting with interviewing, hiring, and training employees; planning, assigning, and directing work; appraising performance; rewarding and disciplining employees; addressing complaints and resolving problems.
MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS
Education and/or Experience
Bachelor’s degree (B.A.) or equivalent from four-year college or university in student development, counseling, educational psychology, humanities, recreation or job-related field (Master’s degree preferred) and three years related experience; or equivalent combination of education and experience.
Knowledge and Abilities
General knowledge of the principles, practices; and trends of the Student Affairs field as well as general knowledge of the policies, procedures and practices of the program area to which assigned; thorough knowledge of the principles of individual and group behavior; general knowledge of individual counseling techniques; general knowledge, or the ability to rapidly acquire such knowledge, of the organizational procedures and activities of the CSULB campus; working knowledge of student affairs programs outside the program to which immediately assigned; general knowledge of research and assessment techniques; and general knowledge of contract negotiation.
