Reporting to the Senior Associate Director of Student Activities & Leadership and Director of Sullivan Student Center, the Assistant Director provides leadership in the administration and supervision of student organizations, as well as programming initiatives across campus to promote academic excellence, educational and developmental programming, community service, and responsible social events. The Assistant Director assists with major campus programming, including Association for Campus Entertainment (ACE) Programming, Orientation, and large-scale student organization programming. The Assistant Director works closely with the Senior Associate Director to develop and implement departmental goals and programming efforts.
Primary Duties/Responsibilities
- Functions as a core team member for the Student Activities & Leadership team and is present to assist the Senior Associate Director, Specialist and other Assistant/Associate Directors at major department events including Senior Week, Orientation, Laurentian Weekend, and other major, higher-risk campus events.
- Plan and implement major campus programming and traditions, including concerts.
- New Student Orientation (August and January)
- Coordinate all aspects of the Orientation Leader program, including hiring, training, and supervision.
- Coordinate Pre-Orientation trips with the Outdoor Program, Assistant to the Director of Student Activities & Leadership, and the Student Activities Summer Intern.
- Continually evaluate New Student Orientation.
- Assist with implementation of extended orientation, providing opportunities for first-year students to orient themselves to campus through a series of programming efforts across multiple disciplines.
- Facilitate programs and initiatives focused on the transfer student experience.
- Leadership and administrative support to ACE (campus programming board), Java (student-run music venue), the Outing Club, and Theme Housing Communities, with emphasis on leadership development, program implementations, and mentoring.
- Oversee all Club Sports and collaborate with Athletics, ensuring access to fields, equipment, and support. Advise club teams on traveling for competitions and paying for vendors; assist in troubleshooting other issues that may arise.
- Coordinate the event registration process and training for Special and Alcohol Events held by students and student organizations.
- Assist with advising class councils.
- Advise student clubs or organizations as needed on operational issues, fiscal management, and liability.
- Coordinate Advisor Resources for the faculty/staff advisors to student organizations. This includes development and maintenance of the advisor guide on the Student Activities & Leadership website and coordination of a once a semester meeting for club/organization advisors. The Assistant Director also assists clubs and organizations in search of a new faculty/staff advisor.
- Negotiate, review, and submit for signature contracts on behalf of the University for speakers, programs, and entertainment.
- Assist with ongoing informal and formal leadership and personal development to student leaders and student organizations.

Minimum Qualifications
- Bachelor’s degree required.
- 1-3 years of experience in student life, undergraduate student leader or graduate assistant experience acceptable
- Understanding of emerging issues in higher education, particularly in student leadership development
- Applied understanding of student development theories
- Demonstrated intercultural competence, and a continuing commitment to advance equity, inclusion, and social justice practices in support of a diverse community.
- Excellent written and oral communication skills.
- Willingness to work evening and weekends as student programming needs and major events require
- Comfort using and/or learning
Preferred Qualifications
- Master’s degree in education, higher education administration or counseling, psychology, or related field.
- Prior experience working with orientation and/or student activities at the graduate or undergraduate level
- Involved regionally or nationally in professional associations within higher education.
- Previous experience at a rural and/or liberal arts focused institution.
