Responsibilities: | Main Purpose of the Position: The Director reports to the Assistant Vice President for Student Affairs. The Director provides strategic, administrative, operational, and budgetary direction to all units included in the Campus Life Department including Student Engagement, Marketing and Promotion, Design and Print Production, Event and Conference Services, and Facility Operations. The Director provides direct supervision to 4 full-time staff and indirect supervision to over 30 full-time and contingent staff. The director also provides indirect supervision to over 200 student staff. Description of Duties and Responsibilities: Leadership & Supervision - Provides direct supervision to three Exempt and one Non-Exempt full-time staff including the Associate Director for Student Engagement, the Associate Director for Marketing and Promotion, the Associate Director for Operations, and the Office Manager.
- Serves as a member of the Student Affairs Committee
- Participates in appropriate University and Student Affairs committees
- Represents UMBC, Student Affairs, and Campus Life at University recruiting, community outreach and alumni events.
- Works collaboratively with the VPSA to manage crisis situations involving students, student organizations, and internal and external events.
- Establishment and implementation of long-term planning, development and execution of annual goals and objectives including a diversity action plan, and assessment of programs, services, and activities.
Fiscal - Develops and manages an annual budget of 5M
- Works collaboratively with the Vice President for Student Affairs, Director for Student Affairs Business Services and Student Activity Fee Review Board to facilitate the development, review, and approval of the Student Activity Fee.
- Works collaboratively with the Assistant Vice President for Student Affairs and other auxiliary funded departmental directors to propose, request, and manage the annual Campus Engagement Fee revenue.
- Monitors income and expenditures within the department and supervises appropriate staff regarding procurement responsibilities.
- Maintains appropriate financial reserves for investment and long-term facility needs while assuring the general and financial condition of the Commons facility.
Partnership and Relationship Development - Engages regularly and meaningfully with students, both formally through student governance and informally through student programming, responding to student needs and concerns, and facilitating students' involvement in the life of the campus.
- Foster collaborations with academic and non-academic units and programs including, but not limited to Undergraduate Academic Affairs, The College of Arts Humanities and Social Sciences, The College of Natural and Mathematical Sciences, The College of Engineering and Information Technology, the Division of Information Technology, Enrollment Management, the Office of Institutional Advancement, UMBC Police, Athletics and Recreation.
Outcomes and Assessment Works in collaboration with the campus life leadership team to: - Develop and provide guidance on the execution of departmental goals and objectives in alignment with Divisional vision and mission, and the University Strategic Plan.
- Oversee the coordination and execution of departmental assessment and research plan.
- Oversees the coordination and execution of the Diversity Action Plan.
- Coordinates development and submission of the annual report.

Required Minimum Qualifications: | - Master's Degree in Student Personnel Services, Education, Business Administration or a related field
- Seven years of successful and progressive management experience in higher education administration, specifically in student life/student activities and/or student union management
- Three years of supervision and management experience connected to professional staff
- Experience understanding fee-based budgets and managing budgets of $1 million or more
- Experience with and commitment to working with a diverse, multicultural population
- Visionary, creative and innovative leader who demonstrates use of cutting-edge best practices
- Excellent verbal and written communication skills, a team oriented work style and the demonstrated ability to work cooperatively with various faculty, staff and students throughout the campus community
